Addresses of Genealogical and Historical Societies With Collections Involving the Eastern Townships

Remember that most of these societies are non-profits kept open through the dedication of volunteers. They run on tight budgets and we all need to keep their financial burdens as light as possible. If you aren't close enough to Canada to buy a stamp for a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope), please include either an IRC (International Reply Coupon) or $1 for postage.

Always make an appointment before visiting any historical society or archive. This helps you establish hours of operation and ensures that the staff will be free to help you.

This is especially advisable for those of you who have French-Canadian roots but speak no French. Most societies, even if they operate mainly in French, will make every effort to help you, and with a little warning can usually find an English speaking volunteer. A little advance planning can make sure that the money and time you spend visiting the areas where your ancestors settled is well spent.

Many of these addresses come courtesy of David Lepitre who has worked very hard to preserve and promote the genealogy of the Eastern Townships.
