Getting A Copy of A Quebec Vital Record

         Vital records before 1900 (vital records being baptisms, marriages and burials) are the responsibility of the Quebec National Archives, records from 1900 on are the responsibility of Le Directeur de l'Etat civil.

         To get a microfilm reader-printer copy of a pre-1900 record, you can write:

               Les Archives Nationales du Quebec

               Information (514) 873-3065

          You must provide source information--microfilm number, location of the church, faith, year, folio number.  As of August, 1999 the archive will charge you $0.25 a page with a $2 minimum per order. 

          Cheques should be made out to Ministre des Finances du Quebec. 

          If you would like to request a birth, marriage or death certificate from the government for any record from 1900 on, you can write:

               Le Directeur de l'état civil
               Service à la clientèle

               Sainte-Foy (Québec)
               G1V 5C5

         They will send you the necessary form.  Don't forget to request it in English, unless you read and write French well.  The fees are on the form.

          You can order a birth, marriage or death certificate from 1900 on on-line by visiting the government's site.
